I started photographing Nigerian ingredients in 2023 when I got my first studio. I was really inspired by Irving Penn's still life work which gave me the idea of photographing ingredients used in Nigerian dishes. I experimented for 6 months, working with studio lighting before realising I preferred daylight as it saturated the colours of the ingredients. I compose an imaginative arrangement of ingredients, directed by a dish they make up which the photograph is titled after. In June 2023, the first series of Life In Stills was created and it has taken me on quite a journey.
Images from Series One have been exhibited at The Barbican Library, Somerset House and The Other Art Fair as well as featured in Native magazine. The project has also received support from ArtsCouncil England.
Life In Stills began as an experiment and it has grown into a beacon that has allowed me to develop my connection to my Nigerian heritage and connect with many people. I plan to make hundreds of images that explore the intricacies of Nigerian cuisine.
